Spring is still a few months off, and this time of the year yards can look a bit dreary. What to do? Here are several cold-hardy plants that can add color and vitality to any yard during the colder months of the year. A bonus: Many of these types of plants can be planted once and can be enjoyed for years and years to come, making them an excellent choice for residential and commercial landscaping.

1. Daffodils

Let’s start with a cold-hardy flower that can cheer up even the most frozen soul. Daffodils, an Atlanta favorite, bring a sense of hominess and cheer to any yard. They poke their little yellow blooms out of the ground and act as a little sunshine for anyone who can see them. They are often the first outdoor flower to show up as winter ends. Plant the bulbs in the ground right now and await their arrival. Daffodils are typically planted six to eight inches deep. They typically come up in February and March in the Atlanta area and once planted, will come back every year after that in late winter. Bulbs can be great no-fuss ways to add color and beauty to any home or investment property.

Plant them in loose and well-drained soil. Bulbs don’t do well in completely soaked and wet soil with no drainage and in those conditions, can be subject to rot. While they can flourish from year to year with no care, you’ll have the most amount of success with some amount of care, including fertilizing.

2. Tulips

You know it’s nearing the end of winter in Atlanta when you start to see Tulips pop up around the city. They’re a great low-maintenance plant for residential and commercial properties, available in a wide array of colors and varieties.

Tulip bulbs are typically planted in the fall, but they can also be planted in the winter and even spring. All you need to do is loosen the soil, scatter some fertilizer appropriate for bulbs (ask your favorite nursery if you aren’t sure) and plant them in loose soil at the appropriate depth indicated on the package. For the most part, winter precipitation is all of the moisture bulbs need to flower nicely in mid- to late-winter and early spring. In times of little precipitation, though, you may want to supplement with a bit of water.

3. Cabbage and kale

We’re talking about the ornamental varieties of these popular vegetables, although you can plant the traditional varieties early in the season as well. Cabbage and Kale are extremely cold-hardy and provide a much-needed splash of green and other colors as winter comes to an end and before other types of plants can be planted in the spring.

4. Violas

Look for perennial varieties that will come back year after year. Hands down, violas will provide the most winter color of any type of flower. Violas are disease-resistant, hardy to super-low temperatures and there’s a variety of colors to choose from. A bit of care can go a long way to providing color when and where you want it.

When it comes to landscaping, bulbs and perennials are great choices for landscaping because most of the time they don’t have to be replanted every year. With proper care, they’ll come back each year. Don’t have a green thumb? Periodic visits by a landscaping company can keep your property looking fabulous.
